If by some chance, however, the name of the subject of Mr. Both writers make no attempt to conceal their disagreements with Dostoevsky, but both remember that, after all, they are dealing with a man of genius. Yarmolinsky’s book, which appeared in 1934 and was revised in 1960, gave us Dostoevsky with a heavy dose of Freud but this again enables him to treat his subject with tolerance and equanimity. ![]() Carr to approach his material with a certain amount of amused sympathy and his book has the further merit of making a serious effort to cope with Dostoevsky’s art. Carr’s book, which appeared in 1931 and has recently been reprinted in England, is written from a supercilious, English-upper-class stance that regards all Russians as quite mad to begin with. ![]() Otherwise, it is a disastrous performance in every respect.Į. Magarshack’s fat volume has one merit and one only-it includes a good deal of factual information in translation. David Magarshack’s book is the latest attempt to write a full-scale biography of Dostoevsky in English, and it is far and away the inferior of two earlier rivals in the field by E. ![]()

It helps that the novel starts with a fairly extensive prologue that’s all about Elena’s struggle to be human. Bitten definitely takes my werewolf prejudice and buries it deeply as Armstrong makes me care about Elena’s plight and the plight of her pack. If the Kelley Armstrong’s writing in the sequels is half as good as it is in this novel, then I’m eager to read them. And while Bitten might be a werewolf novel, I’m given to understand that the Women of the Otherworld series embraces supernatural creatures of all stripes. But there are always exceptions to the rule, such as the Kitty Norville series. I think it’s the pack mentality aspect that freaks me out-that and the related posturing for alpha-male dominance. ![]() ![]() Much like zombie fiction, I tend to habitually give werewolf fiction a miss. ![]() ![]() ![]() “The reaction at Random House was deep grief over Ted’s death, and tremendous relief that the project was off the boards,” Ms. The Cat has that kind of childlike exuberance and childlike nature.” He would jump in the air, sit on a lap, chase someone. “What I meant by that is, I always found that Harpo had a kind of unpredictable madness to him. That's not to say I didn't like the book though (after all, I did give it 8 out of 10! ) ), I loved the twist a quarter way through the book, and I felt that Marian's depiction of Anna's grief and reaction to that grief was extremely well written. This book is no exception to that rule, but as for the plot itself, I have to admit I preferred the way Cecilia Ahern handled it in PS. ![]() Review: **Spoiler** Marian Keyes is a great writer, and I love the way she manages to draw readers into her books from the very first page.
