Through his frontier tales, he tells stories of his youth as that desperado, trying to straddle what really happened and what he wished happened. In his 60s and living in pre-World War II New York City, Winter makes a meager living writing his story in cowboy pulps. In Pulp, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips tell that same story, the last days of the gunfighter, but shift Max Winter’s experience just enough- he’s not spending his old age on the frontier. The man and the wilderness are inseparable. Think of Clint Eastwood’s Bill Munny in Unforgiven he’s old and grizzled but he’s still part of that frontier world right up to the end. Maybe they’re a bit sadder, worn by time but they’re still part of that wilderness that defined them in their youth. ![]() Young cowboys just become old cowboys and the west never ends. But it was a film whose central character was a girl who wasn't blonde or perky or popular, in a delightful turn by Winona Ryder a girl who read books and had unusual interests and never went to the mall. ![]() Not that Mermaids, a coming of age story set in a small Massachusetts* town in 1963, is expressly a teen movie the wonderful performances of Cher and Bob Hoskins make it so much more. The success of Clueless lead to an explosion in the release of teen movies, from sexploitation ( American Pie) to horror ( Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) then cheerleaders ( Bring It On) and mean girls (one mean girl in Cruel Intentions, then a whole eponymous film of them). ![]() Teenage films were pretty much dead as a genre between the John Hughes/Molly Ringwald era of the 1980s and the release of Clueless in 1995. ![]() The film Mermaids meant a lot to me in my early teens, as I guess it did to a lot of women of my generation. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Nicola samori artist![]() ![]() ![]() Their skin flake off and their limbs are so much vividly reminiscent of open sores that one can’t help but pause to scrutinize their suffering, with painstaking attention, even with a hint of dark pleasure, unsure as to whether heal them or let them agonize slowly. Vacillating between life and death, his macabre, liminal creations exist as remnants of an act of violence, of so to speak Erostratism, namely, the morbid drive to prolong oneself in time and become immortal through outrageous and irreversible acts. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments An autobiography of a face![]() ![]() ![]() I was definitely looking for a personal connection because though my story is different from Lucy’s, I knew that getting inside the skin of someone else who’d grown up being very physically different was going to make me feel less alone. I was hungry for more of her work, and then once I found out a little bit about her story, I picked up her memoir. It was “The Country of Childhood” from her As Seen on TV essay collection, and it was about her experience becoming an American citizen (she was originally from Ireland). As I said from my very first post, whether a post on here is about blindness or Breaking Bad or organic chemistry or a book review, I always want the underlying focus to be on storytelling.īefore reading Autobiography of a Face, I’d only read one thing by Lucy Grealy. I can almost guarantee there’ll also be some fiction reviews at some point. ![]() Since memoir and personal essay are some of my favorite genres to write and read and contemplate reading and writing, I thought I’d start putting up some reviews of different memoirs, and use that as a way to dig into discussing different aspects of writing. ![]() |
